Kewirausahaan berasal dari kata “wira” yang artinya berani dan “usaha” yang artinya berusaha, jadi wirausaha adalah seseorang yang berani menciptakan lapangan usaha sendiri.

Menurut J. Schumpeter, wirausaha adalah orang yang bisa mengadakan kombinasi baru, yang merupakan fenomena fundamental bagi pembangunan ekonomi sejalan dengan sifat-sifat entrepreneur atau wirausaha.

Peranan wirausaha dalam perekonomian di antaranya:
1. menciptakan lapangan kerja.
2. meningkatkan kualitas hidup masyarakat.
3. meningkatkan kemakmuran.
4. pemerataan pendapatan.
5. mengatasi ketergantungan dan kesenjangan social.
6. memanfaatkan sumber daya untuk produksi nasional.
7. memajukan perekonomian bangsa dan Negara.

Ciri-ciri wirausaha antara lain:
1. kreatif menciptakan peluang usaha dalam situasi apapun.
2. inovatif terhadap penemuan baru.
3. sensitif terhadap perkembangan perekonomian.
4. berani menanggung resiko yang dihadapi.
5. percaya diri dan pekerja keras.
6. memiliki moral yang tinggi dan bertanggung jawab.
7. terbuka, berpengalaman, dan mampu berorganisasi.
8. ulet, tekun, dan tidak cepat putus asa.

Sektor-sektor wirausaha meliputi hal-hal berikut:
1. sektor ekonomi formal
adalah sektor ekonomi yang harus memiliki ijin usaha secara formal dan berbadan hukum, menajemen yang teratur, dan modal yang cukup, seperti BUMS (PT, CV, atau Firma) dan BUMN (Perjan, Perum, dan Persero), serta koperasi.
2. sektor ekonomi informal
adalah sektor ekonomi yang umumnya tidak memerlukan ijin usaha. Selain itu, manajemennya sangat sederhana dan modalnya relatif kecil, misalnya pedagang kaki lima, pedagang asongan, tukang baso, pengrajin, dan tukang sayur.

Macam-macam wirausaha adalah sebagai berikut:
1. ultrapreneur, adalah wirausaha yang bergerak di berbagai bidang usaha.
2. intrapreneur, adalah wirausaha yang hanya menekuni satu bidang usaha.
3. ekopreneur, adalah wirausaha yang berwawasan lingkungan, dengan kata lain ekopreneur adalah wirausaha yang bidang usahanya mendaur ulang limbah.
